Chapter 13

“You eat, then you fish,” Anne said firmly. “I put my sauce on to cook right after y’all left, it’s gonna be good.”

Ella rinsed the pasta and smiled at Jill and Shay, who looked like a pair of monumentally disappointed children. “You have plenty of daylight left. You’ll be out there right as the fish come in for their supper. Now go wash up for yours.”

“I’ll take the back, you take the front,” Jill said to Shay. “We’ll eat fast.”

Shay stepped into the small bathroom off the kitchen and closed the door. She washed her hands, then splashed a little water on her face, trying to process all the events and conversations she’d had with Jill that day. When they’d first met, Jill was being a prick, and Shay was preoccupied with her dread of the trip, but a tide had rolled in so smoothly that the changes it brought with it swept Shay up before she realized what was happening to her. She was relaxed with Jill, intrigued with how her mind worked; she enjoyed every conversation and craved more. She’d been entranced.

Further contemplation was interrupted by a sharp rap on the door followed by, “Move it, tidbit, we have fish to catch.”

Shay glanced at her reflection as she dried her face, wondering if Jill had intentionally set the proverbial hook that was in her lip. She didn’t know if she should allow Jill to land her or fight it all the way.

“We’re eating outside, take this to the table.” Ella handed Jill a stack of plates with cutlery on top. “Come back in for another load once you set the table.”

Jill frowned. “Can’t we just eat standing up in here?”

Anne hit Jill upside the head with a roll of paper towels, then added it to the pile in her arms. “Get your ass outside and do what your grandmother said.”

“Just for the record, I am no longer ten years old,” Jill said over her shoulder as she followed orders.

“Take the glasses, please,” Ella said when Shay stepped out of the bathroom.

Jill scowled as Shay set them on the table. “Wine? We’re having wine too?”

“Shut up, you jackass,” Anne spat out with her face pressed to a screened window.

Jill moved close to Shay. “I love getting her stirred up, that’s how we express our affection.”

“You could take the easy route and just…pick her a flower,” Shay said with a smile.

“Eww, no. Anne and I don’t roll like that. Watch this. Is there gonna be salad too? I hope you don’t think we’re gonna sit through coffee and dessert!”

“Jillian Savoy, you little shit, get your ass in here and carry out this food!”

Jill released a happy sigh. “She loves me.”

“Well, I’m not going in there. You can hand me anything she gives you unless it’s a ladle upside the head,” Shay said with a laugh.

When the table was set, they gathered around it, and Anne made an announcement as Jill opened the wine. “I paid seven bucks for that merlot, so it’s a good one.
